BIOGRAPHY
Gian Luigi Gatta is a Professor of Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Milan, where he is also the Chair of the Law Department “Cesare Beccaria”. He writes and teaches in the area of substantive criminal law. He is the co-author of one of the leading Italian criminal law textbook, G. Marinucci, E. Dolcini, G.L. Gatta, Manuale di Diritto penale. Parte generale (2018, Giuffrè Francis Lefebvre), and the author of two books, the first on the retroactivity of the criminal law (2008, Giuffrè) and the second on the meaning and the role of “threat” in criminal law offenses (2013, Aracne). He has also written several articles and essays on different topics that have been published in leading Italian law reviews. He also co-edited the Commentary to the Italian Criminal Code (2015, Wolters Kluwer) and is the editor in chief of Diritto penale contemporaneo, the main Italian online review on criminal law and procedure (www.penalecontemporaneo.it).
Professor Gatta was a visiting scholar at Cornell Law School in the fall of 2016, 2017 and 2018 to carry his research forward on comparative criminal law. In the spring of 2018, he co-taught a class on Comparative Criminal Punishment with Professors Joseph Margulies and Sandra Babcock of Cornell Law School, who taught in Milan as visiting professors.
